Economy: Sandoval Lake Lodge – Puerto Maldona, Peru
Just 30 minutes down the River Madre de Dios from Puerto Maldonado, Sandoval Lake Lodge overlooks what most rainforest specialists consider to be the most beautiful lake in Southern Peru. The property is one building complete with 25 double occupancy rooms that are equipped with private bath, hot showers, and a nice eating area with a perfect view of the lake. The hotel has extremely easy access from Puerto Maldonado, so most travelers opt to stay for one or two nights to experience the surrounding jungle.
While exploring the area, tourists can expect to find thousands of different plant species, nearly 1,000 species of birds, nearly 100 mammals, 1230 butterflies, and at least 127 amphibians and reptiles. If they aren’t hiding, travelers might also catch a view of some of the most spectacular and yet very endangered predators in the area including the Jaguar, the Giant Otter, the Harpy Eagle and the Black Caiman.
Economy: Tambopata Jungle Lodge – Puerto Maldonado, Peru
Established in 1991, the Tambopata Eco Lodge is one of the most well-known and trusted eco-tourism lodges near the Tambopata River. With nine rainforest lodges in the Puerto Maldonado area, the region has been given the status of being the major rainforest eco-tourism destination in South America.
Accommodating fewer than 60 people, Tambopata is one of the smallest lodges in the region and plans keep it that way because they believe smaller groups contribute to a more fulfilling visit and reduce the impact on the many species of fauna that dwell in the nearby forest.
The service at this lodge has been called one of the best because they employ more than 20 people including various guides and research specialists to make guest’s stays as educational and enjoyable as possible.
